For the first time, I argue that teachers face a genuine competitor: artificial intelligence. Not another institution or pedagogical reform, but a tool that students already use daily. AI systems can explain concepts clearly, respond instantly, and scale indefinitely. As a result, students are increasingly confronted with a simple but consequential question: can this be taught more effectively by an AI than by a human instructor?
This question challenges long-standing assumptions in education. For much of modern schooling, instructional authority derived from position rather than comparative effectiveness. Lectures, slide-based presentations, and standardized assignments persisted largely because students lacked viable alternatives. The presence of AI alters this dynamic. When teaching is reduced to information delivery, AI can often perform the same function with greater efficiency and accessibility. This creates structural pressure for educators to articulate and provide value beyond content transmission.
One immediate consequence of this shift is the exposure of low-value academic work. Many assignments function primarily as mechanisms of compliance rather than as meaningful learning experiences. Worksheets, formulaic essays, and other forms of rote production depend on the assumption that effort itself produces learning. AI undermines this assumption by dramatically reducing the cost of completion. When students perceive little intrinsic value in an assignment, delegating it to an AI system becomes a rational choice rather than a moral failing.
This phenomenon can be understood through what I refer to as the economics of schooling. Students operate under constraints of time, attention, and cognitive capacity. When academic tasks appear disconnected from their goals or interests, students seek to minimize the cognitive resources expended. Framing AI use as mere “cheating” fails to address the underlying incentive structure. The more relevant question is whether the task in question justified the cognitive investment it required.
From this perspective, cognitive effort functions as a scarce resource. Students possess a finite capacity for sustained attention and deep thinking, and they allocate this capacity selectively. The availability of AI transforms every assignment into a decision about resource allocation: which classes merit sustained engagement, which instructors warrant attention, and which problems are worth confronting without external assistance. Educators are therefore no longer guaranteed student engagement by default; they must compete for it.
This competition exposes the limitations of traditional justifications for curricular content. Appeals to vague future benefits, such as improved job prospects, are increasingly unpersuasive. When AI systems can already perform a given task, students reasonably question the value of mastering that task independently. Any defense of learning must therefore be grounded in concrete, student-relevant outcomes rather than abstract promises. Value must be demonstrated, not assumed.
While this pressure may be uncomfortable, I contend that it is pedagogically productive. AI compels educators to clarify the purpose of their instruction and the nature of the skills they aim to develop. It shifts emphasis away from performative rigor and toward learning activities that demand genuine thinking and judgment. Such activities are not resistant to AI by design, but they retain value precisely because they require cognitive engagement that cannot be meaningfully outsourced.
AI also introduces a filtering effect within educational systems. Some students are primarily motivated by credentials rather than learning itself. Historically, institutions could manufacture the appearance of competence through enforced compliance. The widespread availability of AI weakens this mechanism. Learning becomes more optional, and the divergence between credential acquisition and genuine understanding becomes more pronounced.
Students who rely extensively on AI may still meet formal requirements, but they are less likely to develop durable cognitive skills. This dynamic has a counterintuitive implication: as superficial competence becomes easier to obtain, genuine understanding becomes rarer and therefore more valuable. For students who are intrinsically motivated to learn, AI reduces competitive pressure by differentiating those who engage deeply from those who merely produce acceptable outputs.
In this sense, AI may enhance rather than diminish long-term opportunities for capable students. As information becomes abundant, the scarcity shifts toward reasoning and judgment. Individuals who cultivate these capacities and use AI as a complementary tool rather than a substitute gain a structural advantage.
AI does not undermine education itself. Rather, it exposes weaknesses in instructional design and incentive structures that have long existed. It forces educators to justify engagement rather than assume it and compels institutions to confront the reality that learning cannot be coerced. It can only be chosen.
